Dental care can have a massive impact on your pet’s quality of life. Dental disease that goes untreated is painful and can lead to heart disease, liver disease, and affect the rest of the body.
If your pet has bad breath or heavy tartar/calculus on their teeth, they may be in more pain than we realize. Our focus at Vet Next Door is preventative medicine, which includes educating our clients about the best ways to keep their pet’s mouth disease-free.
There are many different ways to improve your pet’s dental hygiene, including home brushing, certain dental chews, and regular oral examinations by your veterinarian. The Veterinary Oral Health Council has a great list of approved home-care products that have undergone studies to show their effectiveness at vohc.org. Not all “dental” products are equal!
The most effective way to protect your pet from dental disease is through professional cleanings. At Vet Next Door, we perform dental cleanings and advanced dental care such as surgical extractions. We do NOT promote non-anesthetic “dental cleanings” as these are dangerous, stressful, and painful for your pet. Anesthesia-free cleanings are merely cosmetic and fail to address the actual underlying disease.
Every patient that has a dental cleaning performed at our hospital will have dental radiographs taken while under anesthesia. Because the most serious dental disease happens below the gum line, we feel that it is poor medicine to not include these with the procedure. We pride ourselves on the gold standard care provided to every patient that walks through our door.
